Classic Cocktail with a Twist

Whiskey Sour

A pillar in whiskey cocktails, the Whiskey Sour has remained mostly unchanged over its centuries-long history. With its great taste and simple recipe – it’s for good reason. A Whiskey Sour cocktail is traditionally made with bourbon or whiskey, lemon or lime juices, and a sweetener, but it’s not uncommon to mix in a little egg white too.

Ways to Enjoy a Whiskey Sour

A classic Whiskey Sour cocktail is refreshing, slightly tart, and sweet and can be made using lemon or lime. Your Whiskey Sour should be a golden amber color, if strained correctly the cocktail will be clear with top notes of citrus and the bourbon aroma underneath.

From perfect pairings to the difference in taste between lemon and lime, here’s how to enjoy a Whiskey Sour (which won’t be difficult – trust us!).

Pairings for a Whiskey Sour cocktail

Depending on your preferences, there’s a range of foods and flavors that pair well with a Whiskey Sour. Particularly spicy foods like spiced nuts, as the salty flavors complement the sweet and tangy elements of the cocktail. The slight sweetness of a Whiskey Sour can offset the heat in spicy dishes, making it a good match for spicy cuisine.

Lemon vs. Lime in a Whiskey Sour

Adding lemon juice to your Whiskey Sour brings a tart flavor to the cocktail, balancing well with the sweetness from the simple syrup and the depth of the bourbon.

If you opt for lime juice, your cocktail will have a zestier kick, which can alter the flavor profile of the drink.

Both lemon and lime can be used in a Whiskey Sour, and the choice between the two is completely up to you.

How to make a Whiskey Sour with egg whites

If you want to add egg whites to your Whiskey Sour, you need to separate the white from the yolk. For the perfect egg white froth, add the egg whites (no ice) to a cocktail shaker and shake for 15-20 seconds so the egg becomes frothy before adding the rest of your ingredients to the shaker.
